Hattie E. Leask, 86, formerly of Bath, passed away on Dec. 7 surrounded by loving staff and family at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta.
Born in Boothbay Harbor on April 22, 1921, she was the daughter of Ezra and Elmyra Gross Webber, Sr. Hattie grew up in North Edgecomb and attended Lincoln Academy, graduating in 1938. Her intention was to work and her favorite pastime was being pleasant. A quotation from her yearbook stated, “She had a tender winning way and walks the earth with gentle grace.” She was active in the Debating Club, Friday Afternoon at a Village School, hiking, Glee Club and was art editor of the Lincolnian.
Hattie married Bertram Leask of Bath on Sept. 25, 1937. They made their home in Bath with their son, Eugene. She and her husband were members of the Sage Swingers Square Dance Club. They danced for over 30 years, traveling throughout New England and Canada. They were married 54 years until Bertram’s death on May 6, 1991.
Hattie enjoyed her career as a secretary for Morse High School and the Vocational Department for over 30 years, never missing one day of work. She was highly efficient, well respected and known for her dedication to students and staff.
Hattie had many interests, including golfing at the Bath Country Club with her husband, bowling with the Senior League at the Yankee Lanes, and line dancing at 55 Plus and the Bath Senior Center. Her group performed on several occasions at area nursing homes and local events.
Hattie was incredibly talented in knitting, crocheting and tatting, making an abundance of afghans, mittens, doilies and other handiwork for family, friends and the Bath Children s Home. She enjoyed working outside, walking, playing cribbage, and taking long rides with her husband, haddock dinners at Captain Mike s and Dairy Queen ice cream. She had a passion for birds, watching them from her back porch. Red cardinals were her favorite and she was known to have one follow her on her two-mile walks. Hattie was well known for her quick wit and humor. She was a dear friend to many and deeply loved her family.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bertram Leask; sister, Cora Gray; and brother, Ezra Webber Jr.
Survivors include her devoted and loving son, Eugene B. Leask of Bath and partner Linda Bohan of Harpswell; grandchildren, Anne-Marie Leask of Bath, Robert Leask of Bath, Joseph Leask and wife Misty of Bath, Melissa Leask and partner Kevin Hamor of Lisbon, and April Benner and husband Robie of Bowdoin; brother, Robert Webber and wife Marion of East Windsor, Conn.; seven great-grandchildren; nephews, Larry, Steve, Jay, and John and spouses; nieces, Judy and Jayne and spouses; and 10 grandnieces and nephews.
Memorial service 3 p.m., Fri., Dec. 14 at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick with the Rev. Harold Header officiating.
