Helen A. Wilshire, 77, of Friendship, died Aug. 22 after a brief illness. She was born June 6, 1938 in Waldoboro to Clarence Richards and Myra Genthner Richards. She attended A.D. Gray School in Waldoboro and later received her GED from Rockland High School. Helen grew up on Bradford Point in Friendship. She married Dick Wilshire on March 30, 1957 and they continued to make their home on Bradford Point raising their three sons.
While taking care of her children, she often would babysit for family and friends. When the boys were growing up, they spent many summers at camp in Nobleboro, swimming and boating. She was a member of the Friendship Ambulance Service and Auxiliary for 20 years. She worked at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport in housekeeping for 13 years and at the deli at Hannaford for 10 years until she retired.
Helen was a very proud mother and grandmother. She was very active with her two grandsons, Richard and Joshua. She never missed one of their baseball games. She would always bring goodies and drinks for the entire team.
Helen’s love of crocheting was appreciated throughout her family and the community. Every family member has an afghan, along with hunting hats, colored hats and an array of mittens that she made with love for her family. She also made items for newborn babies at Pen Bay.
Helen was predeceased by her parents; and brothers, Cyrus Richards and James Richards.
She is survived by her husband, Richard T. Wilshire Sr. of Friendship; sons, Richard T. Wilshire Jr. and wife Terry of Warren, Danny J. Wilshire of Friendship, and Douglas C. Wilshire of Friendship; brothers, Virgil Richards of Friendship, and Douglas Richards of Friendship; sister, Lorraine Duda of Friendship; grandsons, Richard Wilshire and wife Lacey of Union, and Joshua Wilshire and wife Kayla of Waldoboro; great-grandchildren, Madison, Austin, and Lindsay; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service to celebrate Helen’s life will be held at 3 p.m., Fri., Aug. 28 at the Village Cemetery in Friendship. A reception will immediately follow at the Hahn Community Center in Friendship.
