Helena (Nina) Prescott McDaniel, 89, a summer resident of Christmas Cove, died July 30 after bravely and gracefully facing Alzheimer’s disease.
Nina was born at home in Passaic, N.J. on Jan. 18, 1923, to Amos Neal Prescott and Marion Drukker Prescott.
She was graduated from Pine Manor College in 1942, after which she married Lt. Daniel C. Marshall. She was widowed in 1944, when Lt. Marshall was shot down over the Pacific.
She later married Augustus C. (Gus) McDaniel, with whom she shared her life for 58 years.
Nina was deeply involved in the Cleveland community – volunteering for more than 20 years at University Hospitals (including presiding over its Friends organization), actively participating in the Shaker Lakes Garden Club, and serving on the board of the Recreation League of Cleveland. She strongly supported her husband Gus’ leadership in the machine tool industry, accompanying him on business trips to 16 countries around the world, from Asia to Europe to South America.
Gus and Nina spent summers in Christmas Cove where Nina’s family’s roots go back for generations. She appreciated the beauty found in nature, especially along the coast. At a young age, she became an accomplished sailor and enjoyed boating throughout her life.
In addition to her husband, Augustus, she was predeceased by younger brothers, Amos N. and Edward D.
She is survived by daughters, Marny Kaufman (Craig) of Quechee, Vt., Merry McCreary (Rob) of Hunting Valley, Ohio, and Nina Bolwell (Brian) of Novelty, Ohio; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in her name to St. Hubert’s Episcopal Church, 8870 Baldwin Rd., Kirtland Hills, OH 44060, where memorial services will be held 4 p.m., Mon. Aug. 13
