Helene S. Dow, 86, passed away Nov. 21 at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta.
She was born March 18, 1920 in Friendship, a daughter of Stacy and Mildred Burns Simmons.
Helene graduated from Lincoln Academy in the class of 1938. She was on the girls’ championship basketball team, helping to win the first and only championship game for Lincoln Academy, until the class of 1982 won their season.
Helene enjoyed baking beans year round for her family. She was an avid hunter, shooting her last eight-point buck in 1968. She shot her last deer, the last minute of the final day of hunting season that year.
She was a competitive bridge player who played with her lady friends in Florida and Damariscotta and most recently, every week in Waldoboro.
She loved to travel, go on cruises, spend time with her family at the log cabin in the Allagash, the cottage on Kaler’s Pond in Waldoboro, snowmobiling, ice fishing and standing out by the fire drinking what she loved most, coffee.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 46 years, the Honorable Wilmot S. Dow; sisters, Connie Bagley and Grace Hatch; brother, Lowell Simmons; grandson, Brian Jackson; and companion, Charlie Everett of Presque Isle.
Survivors include her sons, Wilmot E. Dow and wife Donna of Waldoboro, and Senator Dana Dow and wife Lisa of Waldoboro; daughter, Donalene Verge and husband Dana of Thomaston; grandchildren, Melinda Genthner and husband Philip of Friendship, Leslie Parent and husband Pat of Warren, Debbie McDonald and husband Pat of Quincy, Mass., Sonia Bates of Cushing, Wilmot L. and Whitney Dow of Waldoboro, Lindsey Alexander of Windham, and Zachary Alexander of Naples, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Hanna, Marcus and Tucker McDonald of Quincy, Mass., Kayla Parent of Warren, Philip and Steven Genthner of Friendship, Shane Duncan of Cushing, Garrett and Trevor Bates of Rockland, and Caitlin Raye of Cushing; sisters, Bea Kaler of Scarborough, Vera Fish of Damariscotta, and Gloria Knipe of New Harbor.
Visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Fri., Nov. 24 at Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 949 Main St., Waldoboro.
Celebration of Helene’s life 11 a.m., Sat., Nov. 25 at the Waldoboro United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph Beardsley officiating. A reception will immediately follow the service in the church vestry with burial at 1:30 p.m. in the German Protestant Cemetery in Waldoboro.
