Herbert W. “Wilbur” Loud Jr., 83, of New Harbor, passed away on the evening of March 18 at the Cove’s Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta. Born in Waldoboro on Jan. 28, 1928, he was the son of Herbert Sr. and Estella (Genthner) Loud.
Wilbur grew up in New Harbor and attended Bristol schools. For many years he worked at Gilberts Wharf, as well as on various fishing boats. For about eight years he also worked at a newspaper in Massachusetts, but he eventually returned to Maine where he continued his love of working on the water. On one fishing trip, a 5-year-old boy fell overboard and Wilbur jumped in to save him. Almost 50 years later, he and the boy were reunited and Wilbur got to meet not only the man he once saved, but also his children.
He was an avid bowler and was a member of many bowling teams and leagues, with many trophies to prove it. He also frequented Bingo games, and enjoyed a visit to Hollywood Slots in Bangor. He enjoyed working in his garden but especially loved growing and selling raspberries.
He is survived by his loving mother, Estella Collamore of New Harbor; sisters, Elsie Benner of Waldoboro and Chalmer Lewis of Boothbay; many nieces and nephews; as well as special friends, George Sawyer and Carl Reilly.
Time of visitation 5-7 p.m., Wed., March 23 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. Funeral 2 p.m., Thurs., March 24, also at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in the New Harbor Cemetery.
