Isabel Kaler McGrath, 89, of Damariscotta, and former longtime resident of Waldoboro, died Oct. 26 at the Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta after a long illness.
Isabel was born April 2, 1919 in Waldoboro, the daughter of Walter E. and Mary Elizabeth Cheney Kaler, and is a graduate of Waldoboro High School.
She began her working career at her family’s store, Kaler’s Store as a clerk for many years, she was also a clerk with Gay’s Store, also in Waldoboro, and retired from the Waldoboro Lockers.
Active in town, she was a life member of Lakeview Chapter # 179 Order of the Eastern Star, member of the West Waldoboro Community Club for many years, and the Rebekah’s of Waldoboro. She loved to braid rugs, grow flowers and vegetables in her garden, then can what she grew, and was well known for her current jelly. She also enjoyed handwork, including embroidery and knitting.
Isabel is predeceased by her husband Edmund Hilary McGrath, who died in 2004.
Survivors include her son James Michael McGrath of Stephenson, Wash.; two daughters, Sara Crespi of Amherst, N.H., and Mary Connolly of Winthrop, Mass.; five grandsons; four granddaughters; four great-grandsons; a great-granddaughter; and dear friends, Steve and Joanne Burns of Friendship, Lena Creamer of Waldoboro, Pat Morris of Bremen, and Pat Magee of Waldoboro.
Celebration of Isabel’s life 11 a.m., Wed., Oct. 29 at the Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 949 Main St., Waldoboro, with Rev. Robert Dorr officiating. Later interment will be in the German Cemetery.
