Jacob Leland Varley of Pemaquid Beach passed away on April 26 at his home, with his daughters by his side.
Born in Northampton, Mass., Feb. 15, 1941, he was the son of (the late) H. Leland and Elma A. (Kennel) Varley.
He graduated from Amherst Regional High School, and joined the U.S. Air Force where he served during the Vietnam War era. He later attended the University of Southern Maine at Gorham where he earned his teaching degree. He went on to teach for more than 30 years, inspiring students of all ages and abilities. He also earned a Master’s degree from the University of Southern Maine at Gorham.
Although he officially “retired” from Lincoln Academy in 1997, he continued to advise and support the Industrial Arts education program, working with students new and old.
He was a faithful member of the Beaver Island Yacht Club, and the Lighthouse Antique Auto Club. He also volunteered with the Community Housing Improvement Project (CHIP) for many years until he was no longer able to do so because of his arm. Jake was diagnosed with Hodgkins Disease in 1969 and was one of the oldest surviving Hodgkins patients.
He is survived by his daughters, Susan Golden and husband Jay, and Heather Miller and husband Joshua; sisters, Stephanie Stephenson and husband Wendell, and Natalie Varley; grandsons, Thomas Varley Golden, Joseph Henry Miller, and Jacob Kenneth Miller; three nephews; two nieces; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He also leaves his friend Kathie Card, and his dog, Don’t.
Friends are invited to be with the family 5-7 p.m., Fri., May 4 at Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.
A private memorial service will take place at a later date.
