James F. Smith, 76, of Windsor, passed away on Oct. 7 at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.
Born Aug. 23, 1931 in Auburn, he was the son of Harold and Florence Berry Smith. He graduated from Mechanic Falls High School.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and earned two Bronze Service Stars.
He retired in October of 1994 after working as a heating ventilation and air conditioning technician at VA Togus for 33 years. He was a life member of the VFW Farrar-Ross Post 9437, Washington.
James was a true giver, one of the most unselfish men who dearly loved his family and kept them all going. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
He was predeceased by his sister, Sylvia Pettengill.
James is survived by his wife of 53 years, Alice Kinney Smith of Windsor; children, David Smith and wife Sue of Saco, Valarie Johnson and husband Chris of Somerville, Andrea Smith and partner George Drager of Augusta, Jess Smith and partner Eric Gagnon of Wales, and Edie McGrail and husband Norman of Windsor; grandchildren, Sarah and Matthew Smith, Amanda Whitegiver and husband Dillon, Danielle Jonassen and husband Keith, Connor Smith-Gagnon, Sean and Brendan McGrail; and several nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held at the New Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Rd., Augusta.
Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.
