Janet B. Powell (nee Black), 72, of Chatham Borough, N.J., passed away at Morristown Memorial Hospital on May 17. Janet was born in Everett, Mass., and raised in Mamaroneck, N.Y. She graduated from high school from St. Catherine’s Boarding School for Girls in Virginia in 1952. Janet also lived in Middlebury, Vt., and Roseland before moving to Chatham in 1965. In 1956, she graduated from Middlebury College with a B.A. in English.
Janet was a member and trustee of the Minisink Swim Club in Chatham as well as a member of the Chatham Junior Woman’s League. She was a past parishioner at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and a past member of the Long Cove Tennis Club in Maine. Janet loved spending summers at the family’s summer home in Chamberlain. She enjoyed reading, playing tennis and bridge, cooking and traveling; but she especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
She was the beloved wife of 44 years to the late Blair Powell; loving mother of Lynne Delino and husband Ron of Gillette, and Laurie Derrig and husband Dave of Littleton, Mass; cherished grandmother of Tyler, Andrew, Kristine, and Emily; dear sister of Peter Black and wife Ellen; also survived by her faithful companion, Maxie.
Funeral service 10 a.m., Mon., May 22 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 200 Main St., Chatham. Interment will follow at Somerset Hills Mausoleum.
