Janet MacDonald Valaitis, of Waldoboro, died at home on Aug. 6.
She was born July 29, 1924 in Glasgow, Scotland, the youngest of nine siblings. In 1948 she married John Valaitis, her husband of 60 years. In 1953, they emigrated to the United States where they became citizens.
Janet worked as a secretary in the X-ray department at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, Conn., before her longtime employment as a secretary and receptionist at the YMCA in Torrington for 39 years.
She was a member of The Berkshire Singers, and performed in community theater productions at the Warner Theater. In retirement, she enjoyed reading and yoga classes at the Sullivan Senior Center.
Shortly after the death of her husband, Janet moved to the Lincoln Home in Newcastle where she made many new friends.
Survivors include son, John Valaitis and wife Susan; and grandsons, Hugh and Malcolm Valaitis.
The service will be private.
