Joan M. McFarland, 77, of Bristol, passed away peacefully May 26 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Nov. 24, 1931 in Lynn, Mass., the daughter of the late Maurice and Malvina Soucy Abare. She attended local schools and was a graduate of South Bristol High School.
For many years she worked at the Thompson Inn in South Bristol. She married Marshall McFarland in 1950 and they lived in various places until they settle in South Bristol.
Joan enjoyed being a homemaker and taking care of her family. She worked at Miles Memorial Hospital as a cook. She enjoyed both cooking and baking and was well known for the wonderful things that she made.
She was an avid bowler and participated on many teams until two years ago. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, jigsaw puzzles, beano, camping and cookouts with her family on the Half Tide Island.
She was predeceased by her sister, Virginia Wilkinson and ex-husband, Marshall A. McFarland.
Survivors include her children, Virginia Willey and husband Paul of Bristol, Michael McFarland and companion Patti Bourgeois of Gardner, Mass., Lisa M. Farrin of Waldoboro, Lori Orne and companion Mark Storozynsky of Bristol, and Cheryl McFarland and companion Lyle Wheeler of Wiscasset; brother, James C. (Jack) Abare and wife Lona of Boxford, Mass.; grandchildren, Brian Willey of Crestwood, Ky., Brent Willey of Bristol, Samuel Hancock of Newcastle, Beth Hancock of Nobleboro, Ashley and Kristin Orne of Bristol, Mathew and Dylan Tedford of Edgecomb, and Samantha and Kayne Bourgeois of Gardner, Mass.; great-grandchildren, Nathan and Nicholas Willey of Crestwood, Ky., Jayden Orne of Bristol, and Sidney Willey of Bristol; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Celebration of Joan’s life and memorial service was held May 30 at Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Waldoboro.
