John B. Lane, 94, of Bristol, passed away on the morning of March 28 at the Hospice Unit at Maine Veteran’s Hospital in Augusta. He was born in Trenton, N.J., the son of the late Dick and Marion Lane, and grew up in Newton, Mass. He was “Jack” to his friends and family.
Jack enlisted in the Air Force in 1941, and served for five years during WWII; two of which were as an instructor pilot in the U.S. before going to Europe, where he was a B26 Bomber Pilot and Operations and Squadron Leader. This is where his love of photography started when he traded his liberated motorcycle for his first camera, a Leica.
After moving to Cape Cod in 1948, he was in the plumbing and heating wholesale supply business, predominantly as branch manager of F.W. Webb Co. in Hyannis, Mass., before starting his own photography business with his wife Jeanne in Centerville, Mass. There, they spent 35 years before moving to New Harbor in 1985, where he continued his love of photography by adding aerial photography to his many talents.
Besides his parents, Jack was predeceased by his son, Bert Lane; and brother, Dick Lane.
Jack is survived by wife, Jeanne of Bristol; brother, Howard “Brud” Lane of Waquoit, Mass.; daughters, Gennie Whelden of North Falmouth, Mass., and Peggi-Beth Doxsee of Bedford, N.H.; grandchildren, Benjamin Whelden, Brooke Jaquello, Meghan Andrade, and Taylor Doxsee; as well as eight great-grandchildren.
A family memorial and graveside service will take place at a later date
