John Carroll Young Jr., 56, of Augusta, passed away with his family by his side on Feb. 5 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta Campus, after a year and a half battle with cancer. He was born in Augusta on May 14, 1953, a son of John Carroll Young Sr. and Beverly (Delaware) Young.
John attended Cony High School and then entered the U.S. Armed Forces. He worked a variety of jobs over the years: Hallowell Shoe Co., Crowe Rope and his last 20 years at Bath Iron Works. John enjoyed reading history of World Wars. He was a big sports fan and enjoyed the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco Giants, the Boston Red Sox and Nascar racing.
John was a home body, enjoying his daughters, two grandchildren and wife of 27 years.
He was predeceased by his mother, Beverly (Delaware) Young; brother, Tracy Young; and father-in-law, Arthur L. Hall.
John is survived by his wife of 27 years, Valinda S. (Lovely) Young of Augusta; daughters, Jenny Young and Miranda Young, both of Augusta; father, John C. Young Sr. and wife Stella of Litchfield; granddaughters, McKenzie Young and Jasmine Moore; sisters, Tena Dexter and husband Vern of South Gardiner, Cindy Drummond of West Gardiner, Raeanne Baker and husband Andy of Hallowell, Wendy Cook of Pittston, Cheryll Barnard and husband Butch of Augusta, and Tonya Young of Augusta; brothers, John Charles Young of Vassalboro, and Randy Young and wife Josie of the state of Washington; mother-in-law, Reba A. Hall of Augusta; cousin, Duke Dow who has been by his side the last year and a half; also his friends, Ronald McDonald and Ralph Turner.
At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. Graveside service will be held at a later date in the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.
