John E. Potter Sr., 75, of Edgecomb, died March 21 at his residence.
John was born in Gardiner on June 22, 1942, a son of Roy B. and Mildred M. (Smith) Potter. He graduated from Gardiner High School in 1960 and entered the U.S. Air Force, serving four years. He met Marsha J. (Schmal) Creamer on a blind date and they married shortly thereafter on Jan. 22, 1966.
John and Marsha resided in Wiscasset for two years, later building their home in Edgecomb where they started a small farm and raised their family. He retired from Bath Iron Works after working there for 40 years. John was a member of the Lincoln Lodge of Masons having been raised on June 22, 1972 with both of his brothers Roy and Dick.
John was a devoted family man who enjoyed moose hunting trips with his boys, family gatherings (especially the surprise 50th wedding anniversary party) and long weekend getaways in New Hampshire.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by brothers, Roy B. Potter Jr., and Dick Potter; sister, Barbara Hodgkins; and granddaughter, Sara Potter.
He is survived by his wife, Marsha J. Potter of Edgecomb; sons, Frank H. Creamer of Edgecomb, Roy D. Potter and wife Karen of Edgecomb, and John E. Potter Jr. and wife Erin of Newcastle; daughters, Beth Jordan and husband Clayton of Whitefield, and Tina Lear and husband Bob of Whitefield; 11 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; many nieces and nephews; as well as his beloved dog, Gracie.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Sat., March 31 at Daigle Funeral Home, 819 High St., Bath. A gathering of family and friends will take place at the Potter home immediately following the service. Burial will be held at Whitefield Cemetery in Whitefield later this spring with military honors.
