John H. Kennedy, 87, of Cumberland Center, left us peacefully at Maine Medical Center on May 13.
John was born on Nov. 27, 1923 in Waldoboro, the son of William Kennedy and Grace Calderwood Kennedy.
He enjoyed doing many activities and being with his family. He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife Virginia for 65 years. He was a giving and caring father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He was a graduate of Waldoboro High School. After which he served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945 in the European and Pacific Theaters, where he earned the rank of Petty Officer. Kennedy had been Chairman of the Waldoboro Planning Board, Chairman of the Downeast Council, Boy Scouts of America, Past Director of the Waldoboro Chamber of Commerce and Past president of the Lions Club of Waldoboro. He served in the Businessman’s Association in Farmington, was a director of the Farmington Lions Club; and was a Corporator of the Franklin County Savings Bank. In Portland he was director of Junior Achievement; a Director of Community Counseling; President and Director of the area Development Council of the Chamber of Commerce; the United Way Campaign; a Director and Life Member of the Cumberland Lions Club and a Corporator of the former Maine Savings Bank.
For 40 years he was employed by Central Maine Power Company. He worked in Rockland, Waldoboro, Farmington and Portland, retiring as Manager of the Southern Division.
He was predeceased by his mother; father; and brothers, Harold, Arthur and Ronald Kennedy; son, William Kennedy; and granddaughter, Claire.
Surviving are his wife Virginia Pinkham Kennedy; daughter, Pam and husband Eugene Richardson; daughter-in-law, Robin Kennedy Kiel; grandchildren, Michelle Dennison, Julie Schmidt, Bo, Ty, and Max Kennedy; six great-grandchildren; and sister, Arlene Baum of St. George.
A graveside serve will be held for the family at a later date.
