Katherine L. Newman, 100, of Boothbay Harbor, passed away July 12 at the Gregory Wing at Saint Andrews.
She was born June 30, 1911 in Boothbay, a daughter of the late George W. and Ida Burnham Leeman. She attended local schools and was a graduate of Boothbay Harbor High School, Salutatorian, Class of 1928.
She taught commercial subjects as Norway High School from 1930 through 1934.
In 1934 she married Freeman Grover and she bore two sons, Bruce F. and Dale O. Grover.
While raising the boys she was president of the Parent-Teachers Association.
She served as Most Excellent Chief of Pythian Sisters and as D.D.G.C. of State of Maine Pythian Sisters and a Star Point in Eastern Star.
She assisted the Lions Club as secretary during their blood drives during WWII and was a volunteer at local U.S.O.s during WWII.
She entered into the U.S. Postal Service in July of 1946, serving at the Boothbay Harbor office, retiring in 1966.
In 1953 she married Charles A. Newman in Our Lady Queen of Peace church. Following her retirement from the Postal Service, they spent winters in Sarasota, Fla. and summers clerking at The Hutch until she reached 80 years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles in August 1963 and brothers, Parker and Ellsworth Leeman;
Survivors include her sons, Bruce Grover and wife Carol of Sarasota, Fla. and Dale Grover and wife Natalie of Hallowell; sister, Idalene Pinkham of Portland; grandchildren, Amber Page and husband Robert of Brunswick, Kris Ferris of Greensboro, S.C., Elaine Dawson and husband Bob of Spring City, Tenn., Nancy Long of Boothbay, Neil Grover and wife Tracy of Boothbay, Bruce Grover Jr. and wife Sharon of Northport, Fla., Ann Leeman and husband Gary of Hancock, Randy Grover and wife Roxanne of Skowhegan, George Grover and friend Debbie of Franklin, Tenn., Rebecca Taylor of Pelham, Ga., Tammy Holman and husband Jeff of Belgrade and Kathy Healey and husband John of Jefferson; 28 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; nieces, Joanne Oliver and husband Landon of Walpole, Judith Plummer and husband Hal of Brunswick and Sylvia Rainville and husband Roger of Venice, Fla.; and nephews, Mark Leeman and wife Georgia of Boothbay Harbor, Robert Leeman and wife Nancy of Brunswick, Victor Pinkham and wife Anna of Bucksport and Kenneth Pinkham and wife Mary of Portland.
Celebration of life 1 p.m., Sat., July 30 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Boothbay, followed by burial at the Evergreen Cemetery in Boothbay.
