Katherine Theresa Lahar Ellis, 84, of Dresden, died Dec. 16 at the Veterans’ Affairs Hospital at Togus.
She was born Sept. 29, 1923, in Hartford, Conn., the daughter of Howard and Mabel (Selleck) Lahar.
She served her country proudly in the Navy in WWII as a nurse. She later went on to work at several hospitals and private medical practices as a nurse.
Katherine was a member of the New England Chapter of American Bell Association and the American Bell Association. She was a communicant at St. Joseph’s Church, volunteered at the Cohen Center and was a literacy volunteer. She enjoyed singing in the church choir, bell collecting, square dancing, traveling and cross-country skiing.
She is survived by her children, Thomas Ellis and wife Christine of Georgia, Richard Ellis and wife Doreen of Connecticut, Kathleen Shepard and husband Peter of Bar Harbor, MaryEllen Banaszek of Canaan, Timothy Ellis of Connecticut, Elaine Martinelli and husband Pete of Georgia and Nancy Russell and husband Robert of Dresden; sister, Joan McLaughlin; former spouse, Edward T. Ellis, 20 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her son, Terry.
Family and friends are invited to visit 4-7 p.m., Thurs., Dec. 20 at Kincer Funeral Home, 130 Pleasant St., Richmond.
Mass of Christian burial 11 a.m., Fri., Dec. 21 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Gardiner.
A committal will be in the spring at Forest Hill Cemetery, Dresden.
A gathering will follow the Mass at the Gardiner American Legion, 46 Griffin St., Gardiner.
Arrangements are under the care of Kincer Funeral Home, 130 Pleasant St., Richmond.
