Laura E. Sweeney, 94, passed away on the evening of Nov. 13 at the Lincoln Home in Newcastle. Born on Oct. 16, 1920, in Scarsdale, N.Y., she was the daughter of Blanche Armstead and Edward (Ted) Charles Sweeney Jr.
She spent her early childhood in Scarsdale, N.Y., and during her working years she called Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. home. Upon her retirement, she moved to Damariscotta Mills where she lived until the time of her passing.
A highly educated woman, she attended Packard Junior College, New York University, New School for Social Research (stone sculpture), and the Fashion Institute of Technology.
Her business career began with the publishers of two popular women’s magazines (McCall’s and Redbook). After many years, she resigned as Assistant Marketing Research Director and spent the next 20 years with the largest advertising and marketing agency of its kind. She retired as vice president and a member of its board of directors.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Dorothy Blanche Brown and Ethel Mae Sweeney.
She is survived by her nephews, Dr. Robert Russell Brown, and Richard Armstead Brown and their families.
Her ashes, along with those of her dog “Molly,” will be buried in the family plot at the Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, N.Y.
