Leba Alice Armstrong, 95, of Harpswell and Waldoboro, died March 15 in Naples, Fla. She was born July 13, 1912 in Solon, a daughter of Winfield and Grace Weston Jones. She lived and grew up on a farm in South Solon. She graduated from Somerset Academy in Athens in 1929. She worked one year and went to Aroostook State Normal School, graduating in 1932. Leba taught school in Cornville for a few years. She married Asher T. Armstrong in 1935.
After WWII, they moved to Harpswell where they lived for 35 years. Leba did substitute teaching when the children were small, and later became the tax collector for the Town of Harpswell for 17 years. She was a member of the United Church of Christ, Merriconeag Grange, Harpswell PTA, Kings Daughters and Senior Citizens. In Waldoboro, she was a member of the First Baptist Church, Homemakers Extension, Meenahga Grange, Rebekahs and Senior Citizens. Leba enjoyed all kinds of hand work.
Leba was predeceased by her husband, Asher Armstrong; four sisters, Ruth, Mildred, Vera and Blanche and by three brothers, Roy, Lynwood, and Ralph.
She is survived by two daughters, JoAnne Chipman and husband Merwin of Harpswell, and Mary Skilling and husband Tom of Cincinnati, Ohio; three sons, W. Scott Armstrong and wife Betty Lou of Waldoboro, David Armstrong and wife Darlene of Rural Hall, N.C., and Paul Armstrong and wife Pat of Lisbon Falls; brother, Clarence Jones of Bingham; 17 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Wed., March 19 at the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. A celebration of Leba’s life 1 p.m., Thurs., March 20 at the First Baptist Church in Waldoboro. Pastor Michael Peterson will officiate. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Harpswell in the spring.
