Lucy S. Belknap, 90, passed away peacefully at her home on July 2. Lucy was born in Sissonville, W.Va., the youngest of seven siblings.
Encouraged by her parents, she was the first of her family to attend college. After their marriage, Lucy continued working while Sam attended medical school. They later moved to Damariscotta, Sam’s hometown, and built their home on family land on Water Street. There, they raised their two children, Sandra Lee and Samuel L. Jr.
Lucy was active in the early years of the Miles Memorial Hospital League, the local D.A.R., and the Garden Club, and enjoyed boating and island picnics with friends and family. In her later years, Lucy loved traveling and playing golf with Sam.
Lucy was predeceased by husband, Samuel L. Belknap, M.D.; and daughter, Sandra Lee.
She is survived by son, Samuel L. Jr. and wife Barbara; grandson, Samuel III and wife Christina; great-grandsons, Wesley and Henry; sister, Mildred Jones; step-granddaughter, Janesa Herndon and husband Jess; their children, Zach, Eli, and Ava; and many dear nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
In accordance with Lucy’s wishes, there will be no memorial service, but the family will hold a celebration of life for Lucy and Sam later this summer.
