Mabel (Knapp) McAfee, 94, a longtime resident of Wiscasset, died June 7.
She was born on June 15, 1919 on the summit of Woodford Mountain, Woodford, Vt. near Bennington. She was midwifed by her aunt Emma Pease (her mother’s sister). She was the daughter of Charles E. and M. Frances (Pease) Knapp.
In 1937 she married Robert McAfee of Bowdoin, who later served in the Army during WWII. Mabel and Robert together owned and operated McAfee Forest Products for 35 years. They also were active participants in events sponsored by the Sam Shaw Chapter of the Veterans for Peace.
She was a member of St. Philips Episcopal Church in Wiscasset and several other spiritual organizations.
Family was of great importance to Mabel. She generously spent years and much energy doing extensive genealogy research of her 12 generations of New England lineage. She was an accomplished craftsperson, seamstress and even took up watercolor painting in her 70s. She was a true artist of life.
Mabel was predeceased by her husband Robert in 1993; and daughter Leontine Reed in 2004.
She is survived by son, Glenn McAfee of Bath; daughter, Cheryl Welton of Vancouver, Wash.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The memorial service will be private.
