Margaret P. Lee, 94, of Damariscotta, died Aug. 1 at Cove’s Edge nursing home in Damariscotta. Margaret was born Sept. 26, 1914 in Syracuse, N.Y. to Maurice and Cara Harriman Pohl.
Margaret attended Syracuse University, and then went on to Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Upon graduation, she taught music at Briarcliff College in Briarcliff, N.Y.
At the age of 10, Margaret met the love of her life. New in their Syracuse neighborhood, her mother sent her to go out sledding. She fell off her sled and tumbled into the snow, and 11 year old Harry Lee helped her up and offered to walk her home. That was the beginning of a lifelong relationship.
In their teens, Harry invited Margaret to visit his grandparents in Sargentville where they enjoyed countless hours exploring Penobscot Bay in Harry’s little outboard motorboat. Married in 1939, Margaret and Harry settled in Philadelphia, where they raised their family. Margaret was a helpmate to her husband’s busy pediatric practice for close to 50 years, and was an active volunteer at the local hospital. After visiting the South Bristol area in the summer for many years, they moved permanently to Damariscotta in 1988. They spent the next six years enjoying family, the community and many trips in their boat “Spree.” Margaret resided at Chase Point from 1999 until she moved to Cove’s Edge.
Margaret was known for her love of life and the people around her. She was a devoted wife and a beloved mother and grandmother. A kind and gracious person, her affectionate, generous and fun-loving spirit touched many people.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Dr. Henry F. Lee, in 1994, and her brother, Clarke Pohl.
Margaret is survived by her children, Henry and wife Katherine of Nobleboro and Cara and husband Steve Stanne of New Paltz, N.Y.; grandchildren, Kira Salvatore, Whitney Lee and wife Courtney, Alexander Lee and wife Alison, and Alice and Margaret Stanne; and great-grandchildren, Angelina and Michael Salvatore, Sylvia Lee, Jack Henry Lee and Lauren Ruby Lee.
Memorial service is planned for 3 p.m., Sun., Oct. 11 at the Bunker Hill Church in Jefferson, with Pastor Richard Newell officiating.
Contributions may be made in her memory to Riverside at Chase Point, 51 Schooner St., Damariscotta, ME 04543.
