Margaret S. Hodgdon, 89 of East Boothbay, passed away at St. Andrews Village, Gregory Wing on Jan. 1. She was born in Augusta on July 27, 1922, the daughter of Walter M. Sanborn and Nita L. Sanborn.
She attended Cony High School in Augusta where she graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1940. She attended Wheaton College in Norton, Mass. and graduated in 1944 with a major in Psychology. The following year she entered the Graduate School of Social Work at Boston University and remained there for two years. At that time it would have taken four years to obtain a masters degree. Being anxious to start work, she obtained a position as a psychiatric social worker at the VA Center at Togus. She worked at Togus until she married boat builder George I. (Sonny) Hodgdon Jr. in 1952.
Over the years Margaret enjoyed knitting, gardening, swimming, tennis, fishing and making hooked rugs. She enjoyed cooking and spent many hours making cookies, pies, and various homemade baked goods for the shipyard workers. She was interested in genealogy and spent many hours tracing various branches of the Hodgdon family history. She was an animal lover and especially liked cats. She played piano and during her school years she played the flute in the orchestra and piccolo in the band. For several years she raised chickens and turkeys. She enjoyed going to auctions and was particularly fond of colored glass.
Mrs. Hodgdon was predeceased by her husband in 1995; son, James C. Hodgdon in 1991; brother, Richard B. Sanborn in 1999; and brother, John G. Sanborn in 2006.
She is survived by son, Timothy S. Hodgdon and wife Cathy of East Boothbay; grandchildren, Kyle W. Hodgdon of Auckland, NZ, and Audrey J. Hodgdon of Portland; and several nieces and nephews.
