Marion H. Gunther, 96, of Round Pond, passed away on the evening of July 27 at Round Pond Green after a brief illness. Born on Aug. 13, 1917 in Meriden, Conn., she was the daughter of William and May (Hobson) Hirschfeld.
Marion grew up in Meriden, Conn. and attended Meriden High School and the Meriden School of Nursing where she received her degree as a Registered Nurse. She worked for several years at Meriden Hospital before moving to Massachusetts when her husband, John Gunther, got a job for WBZ television in Boston.
While her husband worked at WBZ, they lived for eight years in Indian Orchard, Mass., eight years in Lexington, Mass., and 21 years in Lynnfield, Mass., before retiring to Round Pond in 1977. While in Maine, Marion was a member of the Round Pond United Methodist Church and the Fortnightly Women’s Club.
She enjoyed many different crafts, and was skilled at knitting, crocheting and needlepoint. In her younger years, she was an avid downhill skier. Throughout the years, she volunteered for many organizations in both Maine and Massachusetts. She was a great cook, and imparted a love of food to her family.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, John S. Gunther; and sister, Phyllis Augenfeld.
She is survived by son, Robert Gunther and wife Brenda; grandchildren, Megan and Robert Gunther; niece, Jane Andren; and nephew, William Augenfeld.
A memorial service for Marion will be held at 11 a.m., Fri., Aug. 15 at the Round Pond United Methodist Church.
