Merle R. Matthews Jr., “Butch”, 55, of Wiscasset, passed away Jan. 24 at his residence.
He was born in Boothbay Harbor on July 22, 1953, the son of Merle R. and Bertha “Bunny” (Arsenault) Matthews.
Butch attended Boothbay schools and graduated from Boothbay Region High School. He was employed by Maine Yankee and the Mason Station for a number of years. He enjoyed many hours of digging on the flats. He was also a very skilled welder and enjoyed collecting antiques.
He was predeceased by his parents.
He is survived by two daughters, Melissa Matthews and Heather Matthews of Wiscasset; sister, Donna Matthews of Bath; many relatives including aunts, uncles and cousins in the Boothbay area; and by many friends, especially the Seigars family of Wiscasset who were very special to him.
Memorial service 2 p.m., Fri., Jan. 30 at the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset with Rev. John Potter officiating. Gathering of family and friends will follow in the Church Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in care of his daughters to the Merle R. Matthews Jr. College Fund, 32 Hale Pond Rd., Wiscasset, ME 04578.
