Michael K. Keegan, 66, of Boothbay Harbor, a former resident of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., and lifetime resident of Saltaire, N.Y., died peacefully on June 23 in Islip, N.Y. He was born Oct. 29, 1947 in Queens, N.Y., the only son of Thomas P. Keegan and Anne Coffey Keegan.
Mike, as he was known, was a proud Vietnam veteran serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He proudly served his country and was awarded several Medals of Honor for his exemplary service. He was an active member of Our Lady Queen of Peace, Boothbay Harbor, and a member of the Knights of Columbus and GW Hudson Council. He was a graduate of Mercy College and had a lifetime business career as a systems analyst for AT&T.
Mike loved life, his family and friends. He enjoyed reading and was an avid sports fan, and never lost his New York roots, cheering on the Rangers, Mets and Giants. He particularly enjoyed spending time at the family home in Saltaire, N.Y. with his lively, large extended family. He was a gentle giant who walked softly with a big heart. Mike was well known and appreciated for his many caring ways throughout West Boothbay Harbor during his time working at the post office.
He was the much-loved husband of Ellen Niewiadomski who predeceased him in 2011. He was also predeceased by his father, Thomas Keegan.
He is survived by daughters, Jennifer Keegan Sanborn of Wiscasset, and Kara Keegan-Staff and husband LCDR Nathan of Jacksonville, Fla.; son, Danny Keegan of Peekskill, N.Y.; grandchildren, Emily, Tristam, Kathryn, and Aidan Michael Sanborn of Wiscasset, and Gavin and Molly Ellen Staff of Jacksonville, Fla.; mother, Anne Coffey Keegan of Queens, N.Y.; and sisters, Barbara Strong and husband John Strong of Rockville Centre, N.Y., Terry Keegan and husband Michael Goldberg, of Putney, Vt., Kathleen Keegan of Hull, Mass., and Ellen LaSorsa of Holbrook, N.Y. He was also the good-humored “Uncle Hot Dog” to nieces and nephews too numerous to list.
