Michael Smith Lailer, 77, passed away Dec. 30, 2013 at the Maine Veteran’s Hospital in Augusta. He was born Feb. 8, 1936 in Gardiner, the son of Frank Albert and Marion Louise (Smith) Lailer Jr.
He grew up in Muscongus Harbor, Round Pond Harbor and Bremen. He was educated at Washington School in Round Pond and Bristol High School at Pemaquid Falls until April of his first year, then later passed his high school GED. On July 21, 1958, he married Doris Glidden in Nobleboro. They lived in Waldoboro then retired to Carrying Place Township where they had a cabin which he loved.
Michael was a veteran who proudly served his country in the Coast Guard Reserve, stationed at Rockland for two years. Then he enlisted in the U.S. Army for three years, stationed at Ft. Bragg, N.C. and transferred to heavy construction engines in Bordeaux, France for two years. He returned in December of 1957 when he was honorably discharged.
Over the years he was employed by Waldoboro Lockers performing various duties; Paragon Button Company, later called Patrician Plastics, as machinist/mechanic; and GTE Sylvania as floor person, truck driver, and machinist/mechanic.
He was involved in many community and civic organizations including King Solomon’s Lodge #0061 for 44 years, Charles C. Lilly American Legion Post 149 for 37 years, Bremen Fire Department, then was appointed assistant chief of the Waldoboro Fire Department in 1964 serving for 20 years, N.R.A., SAM, Sugarloaf Library, and Flagstaff Overlook Home Owner’s Association. Michael enjoyed snowmobiling, ATV riding, fishing, hunting, and history.
He is survived by sons, Dennis Lailer and wife Megan, Gary Lailer and wife Robin, and Robert Lailer and wife Erica; grandchildren, Brandi Griffin and husband Phillip, Brittany Lailer and partner Patrick Dare, Alexis Lailer, Thomas Lailer, and Lance Lailer and partner Kendra McCrum; and great-grandchildren, Keianna Soucia, Bailee Dare, Ryker Dare, and Ace Lailer.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, friends wishing may make donations in Michael’s memory to Duck Pond Care Center, 1787 North Belfast Ave., Vassalboro, ME 04962.
