Mildred Elizabeth “Betty” Lewis, 88, of Somerville, passed away on April 9 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Betty was born on June 2, 1922 in Tremont, the daughter of William H. Pomeroy and Nettie M. (Staples) Pomeroy.
She served as an Army nurse during WWII in New York and New Jersey. She was honorably discharged, a disabled veteran, in 1946.
Betty loved children, raising four of her own, and having a profound influence in the lives of numerous foster children she shared her home with, as well as playing an influential role in the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints since 1952. She was strong in her belief, and her faith was the foundation upon which she built her family. She took great pride in the fact that each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren came home from the hospital in a sweater and bonnet set made by her.
Betty is survived by her four children, Robert E. Lewis of Clinton, James W. Lewis and wife Shirlene of Vassalboro, Jean E. DeMerchant of Whitefield and Phyllis A. Vogel of Somerville; 17 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren, as well as many special nieces, nephews and cousins.
Betty was dedicated to, truly loved, and tirelessly served her God, her family, and her country.
Visiting hours 6:30-8:00 p.m., Wed., April 13 at Plummer Funeral Home, 983 Ridge Rd., Windsor. Service honoring her life 2:30 p.m., Thurs., April 14 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 4 Hasson St., Farmingdale. Burial with full military honors will follow in Sand Hill Cemetery, Somerville.
