Nelson “Bud” Hancock, 83, of Nobleboro, passed away on the morning of July 17 at the Coastal Manor in Yarmouth. Born on Oct. 8, 1931 in the living room of his family’s home in Nobleboro, he was the son of the late Nelson and Leola (Chaput) Hancock.
He met Joan Edwards as a teenager, and they married on July 29, 1950, just months after graduation. Bud loved his family and friends, and always had a good time. He was always busy; whether it was cutting wood, working in his garden, or whatever needed tending to, he did it.
He was the fire chief for the town of Nobleboro for 18 years, and also served as a selectman for a few years. In 2008, the Nobleboro town report was dedicated to him for his service to the town. He worked for the Maine State Prison for nearly 30 years in a few different areas, and retired as the foreman to the license plate shop in 1994. He was also a member of the Freemasons for over 60 years.
He was predeceased by parents, Nelson and Leola; and sister, Beverly M. Hancock.
He is survived by his son, Thomas Hancock; daughter, Britt and husband Josh Hatch; grandchildren, Sam and Lindsey Hancock, Beth Hancock and partner Peter Townsend, Ross Pushard and partner Brianna Johnson, Anna Hatch, and Joel Hatch; cousin, Tim Key; and great-grandsons, Davin and Ethan.
Bud’s service will be held at 1 p.m., Fri., July 24 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St. in Damariscotta. A reception will follow the service at Britt & Josh’s house, 151 Morgan Hill Rd. in Nobleboro.
