Norman L. Sawyer, 89, of Wiscasset, died June 23 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.
He was born in Mechanic Falls on Aug. 6, 1924, a son of Edward F. and Violet (Prince) Sawyer.
He graduated from Mechanic Falls High School in 1942. He entered the U.S. Army, serving during WWII with the Army Engineers Amphibious Regiment in the South Pacific. On July 6, 1951 he married Betty Jean Allen. They moved to Wiscasset in 1972 where he started his plumbing and heating business, retiring at the age of 65.
He was a life member of the Masons in Mechanic Falls and a longtime member of the Downeast Yacht Club.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, skiing and golf.
He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Sawyer of Wiscasset; son, David Sawyer and wife Sheila of Wiscasset; daughter, Crystal Almasi and husband Stephen of Wiscasset; brother, Malcolm P. Sawyer of Mechanic Falls; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
An open house celebration of his life will be held 2-5 p.m., Sat., July 5 at his home at 20 Hooper St., Wiscasset. Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Mechanic Falls at a later date.
