Patricia Carhartt Howard, of Newcastle, died on Dec. 12 at home, surrounded by friends and family.
Pat was born in Grosse Pointe, Mich. on May 22, 1917, daughter of Gretchen Stearns and Wylie Welling Carhartt. She attended the Liggett School in Detroit, Chateau de Mouans-Sartoux in France, Grosse Pointe High School, and the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., where she studied painting with the Hungarian artist, Zoltan Sepeshy.
Her sister Eugenie’s chance encounter on a Florida beach with Waldoboro native Carroll Cooney introduced Pat and her friends to Maine, where she lived from 1945 until her death.
She and her husband, the artist Steve Howard, were enthusiastic sailors who twice ventured to Nassau, Bahamas aboard their sloop Madeira to spend the winter.
Her creative spark illuminated many aspects of her life, ranging from fashionable clothes (which she usually altered to please herself), interior design, and sumptuous meals, to her beautiful voice, true gift for friendship, and an enduring (and sometimes outrageous) sense of humor.
Patricia was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Stephen C. Howard; son, Peter Y. Beaudette; and sister, Eugenie Davis.
She is survived by her son, Bruce L. Beaudette Jr. and wife Susan of Newcastle; sister, Gretchen Valade of Grosse Pointe, Mich.; brother, Arthur Wynn Yates of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Bruce L. Beaudette III and wife Kierstin of Prescott, Ariz., and Lesli Beaudette of Solvang, Cal.; great-grandchildren, Bruce L. Beaudette IV and wife Ashley of San Diego, Cal., Rebecca Chow and husband Ryan of Chandler, Ariz., Katie Szabo and husband Andrew of Tempe, Ariz., and Miles Wayman of Solvang, Cal.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
In lieu of flowers, gifts in her name may be made to the Damariscotta River Association, PO Box 333, Damariscotta, ME 04543.
Arrangements are under the care of Riposta Funeral Home of Belfast.
