Philip Achorn, 88, of Waldoboro, passed away June 26 at the VA home in Augusta.
Philip was born on March 20, 1921 in Hallowell, the son of Homer D., Sr. and Ruth Heald Achorn. He graduated from Hallowell High School, Gates Business College and attended George Washington University. He also was a graduate of Williams College School of Banking. He was a decorated overseas veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater as well as the Asiatic Pacific Theater with the rank of Master Sergeant. Among his citations are three bronze battle stars.
After his discharge from the U.S. Army he began employment in 1946 with Depositors Trust Company where he served at various Maine locations and remained with the same company for 37 years. He was a Regional Vice President of that bank, retiring in 1983.
In 1946 he married Ellen Hunter of Hallowell and they had three sons, David P., Stephen A., and Paul R. Achorn. He was past president of Madison Kiwanis Club, a past president of Skowhegan Rotary Club and a past president of Waldoboro Lions Club. He served for 25 years as a director of the Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan and for a period of time served as that hospital’s president of the board of directors. He was a member of the Old South Congregational Church in Hallowell and the Orff’s Corner Community Church in Waldoboro.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ellen; son, David P.; and brothers, Homer D., Jr. Gerald and half-brother, Leland J. Achorn.
He is survived by two sons, Stephen A. Achorn and wife Catherine of Upton, Mass., and Paul R. Achorn and wife Suzanne of Chelsea; five grandchildren, Angela Caron and husband Chris of Charlton, Mass., Julia McCoskery and husband Craig of Millbury, Mass., Bradley Achorn of Camden, Vanessa Achorn of South Portland, and Stephanie McCue and husband Richard of Orrington; cousins, Marilyn and husband Oscar Noah of Boothbay Harbor, and Paul Noah and wife Shannon of Boothbay.
Visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Tues., June 30 at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. Celebration of his life 1 p.m., Wed., July 1 at the Orff’s Corner Community Church, 2500 Winslow Mills Rd. (Route 32), Waldoboro. Rev. Robert Bellows will officiate.
Burial will be in the Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta.
In memory of Phil and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
