Raymond Francis Hart, 93, of Warren, passed away Nov. 20 at his home with his family at his side.
He was born Aug. 13, 1915 in Warren, a son of the late Louis and Gertrude Fiske Hart. Ray attended the one-room schoolhouse in East Warren and eventually the school system in town.
He worked at Packard Saw Mill in East Warren as a boy and throughout his high school years. He then worked for the Burpee Furniture Store in Rockland before joining the Army in 1942. He was a member of the 87th Infantry serving in Germany and fighting in the battles of Rhineland and Ardennes and Central Europe until the end of the war. He returned to the states in October 1945 and continued with the reserves until 1957 with the rank of Sergeant.
He was employed by Dragon Cement Company in Thomaston until his retirement in October of 1979. He took a year or two off and then went back to work part-time at Franks/Lincoln’s Market in Warren.
He was a Mason Brother at the Aurora Grand Lodge of Maine, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and a lifetime member of the Scottish Rites Valley of Maine.
Ray was a hardworking, thoughtful man who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, working in his gardens, cookouts with the family and seeing people smile.
He was predeceased by his parents; loving wife of 37 years, Evelyn Johnson Hart; and brother, Walter Lane.
Survivors include his children, Arlene Perry and husband Ric of Smithfield, Sharon Smalley and partner Robert Staples of Warren, and Keith Smalley and wife Juanita of Warren; stepdaughter, Helen Marriner of Rockland; three grandchildren in North Carolina, Tanya Bowen, Amber Diaz and Ryan Perry; five grandchildren in Maine, Brian Smalley of Waldoboro, Jeremy Smalley of Tenants Harbor, Jason Smalley of Warren, Rachel Williams of S. Thomaston, and Douglas Williams II of S. Thomaston; 16 great-grandchildren; and his best friend, Callie Sue, his cat.
At Raymond’s request, there will be no public services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Ray’s memory to Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice, 170 Pleasant St., Rockland, ME 04841.
