Robert G. Mortimer, 72, of Bremen, passed away at Maine Medical Center on the morning of Jan. 26 with his family by his side. Born in Boston, Mass. on March 6, 1939, he was the son of Walter and Marion (Heatley) Mortimer.
Robert grew up in Charlestown, Mass. and attended local schools. While in school, he was very active in school sports, especially basketball. After school, he enlisted in the Army National Guard, where he continued to serve for 12 years.
He went to work for Stop & Shop grocery stores while in Massachusetts, eventually becoming the dairy manager there. In 1975, he and his wife, Doris (Davis) Mortimer, moved to Bremen and he started driving trucks throughout the state and New England. While here, he also worked for the Bremen grade school for many years as a custodian and bus driver.
He loved to golf and would find a course wherever his travels led him. He also enjoyed building things and puttering in his workshop. He was baptized as a Jehovah’s Witness in 1974, and has served faithfully for the past 38 years.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Mortimer of Bremen; children, Robert Mortimer and wife Marcia of Bremen, David Mortimer of Kansas, and Nancy Destinoble and husband Jean of Bremen; brothers, Walter Mortimer of Massachusetts, and William “Skip” Mortimer of Florida; sister, Marion Bonia of Florida; grandchildren, Jason Mortimer, Ian Mortimer, Aaron Destinoble, and Bradley Destinoble; great-grandchildren, Andrew Mortimer and Brady Mortimer; mother-in-law, Isabella Davis; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral 2 p.m., Sat., Feb. 4 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Edgecomb.
