Robert L. Kauserud passed away at LincolnHealth – Miles Campus in Damariscotta, on Nov. 14, one month short of his 87th birthday. Robert was born in Providence, R.I. on Dec. 28, 1926 and was the second son of Johann and Dagny Kauserud, both immigrants from Norway.
Robert was a 1947 graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy where he excelled in academics (battalion commander) and athletics. He went on to play football at the University of Wisconsin.
Robert was a Korean War veteran as a boat group commander for amphibious landings in the USN. After his military service, he moved into the private sector in sales. In 1962 Robert was convinced by his friend, Peer Lorentzen, to move to Michigan to help him with his fledgling company called Chem-Trend. Robert remained there until 1988 in the role of Executive VP of sales when the company was sold to Burmah Castrol.
During Robert’s time in Howell, Mich., he helped start junior football, was very active in little league baseball by coaching several teams over 15 years, and organized Howell Youth Day in 1971 to save the program. In retirement Robert traveled, remained active in the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, and built his retirement home in Maine.
During his life, Robert made an impact on many lives.
Robert was preceded in death by his brother, John Peder; and son and namesake, Robert L. Kauserud Jr. (Lasse).
Robert is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rachel; sons, Bjorn, Kristian, and Anders; daughter, Dagny; grandchildren, Eirik, Lasse, James, Derek, Kelsi, Natalie, Rob and Jack; and four great-grandchildren.
A time of visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m., Fri., Nov. 22, at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Sat., Nov. 23 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Newcastle.
