Roland Frances Flanders, 85, of Washington, died Jan. 14 at Togus. He was born June 3, 1925 in Worcester, Mass. to Jessie and Catherine Cronin Flanders. He was raised in Liberty and attended local schools. He attended Walker High School. After high school he joined the U.S. Army serving during WWII. He was a Purple Heart recipient for his bravery during WWII. After the war he worked as a woodsman for many years as well as taking care of his farm where he raised cattle, pigs, chickens and turkeys. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, trapping and liked working on his race car which he and his friends would race at Unity Raceway. He was a big jokester and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a lifetime member of the VFW in Washington. He was a big time flirt especially with the nurses at Togus.
He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Celia Flanders; brothers, Walter, Harold and Daniel Flanders; and half sister, Rita Hanson.
He is survived by daughters, Gail Moore and husband Harold of Washington and Faye Pease and husband Eugene of Union; grandchildren, Jay Moore and wife Donna Hazel deMesa of California, Timothy Pease of Union and Roland Pease of Washington; and great-granddaughters, Meghan and Kara Pease of Union and Malaya Moore of California.
Chapel service 1 p.m., Mon., Jan. 24 at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.
