Shannon Walter Gilbert, 76, of Boothbay, passed away on Nov. 7.
He was the son of Velma Haley and Walter Gilbert of South Bristol. His career was related to the sea, first as a lobsterman, and then as a crewman and captain of commercial fishing vessels. He was also a boiler engineer for several years at FMC in Rockland. He served in the Navy for a brief period during the 1950s.
Shannon had many talents, all of them done with zest and excellence: hunting, woodworking, storytelling, creative design, and most of all, his gardening skill. He turned his produce into fabulous meals for family and friends, and then sent them home with a basket of food.
He was predeceased by son, Shannon “Buddy” Gilbert; brother, Douglas; and daughter, Leanne Young.
His is survived by his wife of 45 years, Dawn Sherman; son, Charles; granddaughter, Eva; brothers, Rowland and Dexter; sisters, June Lovell, Jackie Progue, and Valerie Fossett; grandsons, Edison and Jamie Young; special niece, Andrea Fossett Gray; and many other family members.
A celebration of life will be held 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Sat., Nov. 19 at the American Legion Hall, Industrial Parkway, Boothbay.
