Shirley R. Grover, 79, of Newcastle, passed away on the evening of June 15 at the LincolnHealth – Miles Campus in Damariscotta. Born in Montclair, N.J., on Aug. 11, 1936, she was the daughter of William Sr. and Margaret (Haigh) Dunbar.
Shirley moved to Maine in 1949, and married Clayton Grover in 1956. Shirley was the consummate homemaker, and loved nothing more than spending time with her family and raising her children. When her kids were younger, she taught Sunday school at the Woolwich-Wiscasset Baptist Church.
She was a fabulous baker, and enjoyed decorating cakes. She was a talented artist, painting on slate and glassware, and even painting decorative scenes on store windows during the holidays. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading, watching old western movies, and camping with her husband and family.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sons, Matthew Grover and Andrew Grover Sr.; brother, John Dunbar; and sister, Barbara (Dunbar) Rendmeister.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Clayton Grover Sr.; children, Rose and significant other Eddie Parlin of Jefferson, Clayton Jr. and significant other Barbara Newsome of Perkasie, Penn., Joyce and significant other Reggie Knowles of Fairfield, Mary and husband Mark of Peru, Billy and wife Kim of Nekoosa, Wis., and Jim and wife Michelle of Wiscasset; daughters-in-law, Lori Grover of Minco, Okla., and Leslie Griffin of New Harbor; brother, William Dunbar; as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Wed., June 22 at the Highland Cemetery in Edgecomb.
