Steven J. Yarmey Sr., 94, of Newcastle, passed peacefully at home on the afternoon of May 10.
A Pittsfield, Mass. native of 76 years, he was born May 4, 1920 to Fritz and Anna Yarmey. He was the last surviving of six children: Mary Bossidy, Jean Zimmer, Nellie McNeill, Dorothy Easley, and John Yarmey.
Steve graduated from Pittsfield High School class of 1939 and joined his dad, founder of Yarmey’s New England Window Cleaning Company. A three-year veteran of WWII, Steve was honorably discharged with two Bronze Stars and served in the Pacific Theatre with the 1913th Army Aviation Engineers Group.
He married Ann Merry of Newcastle in 1948. They have five children: Steven Yarmey Jr. of Oregon, Bob, twin Alan (predeceased), Paul of Pittsfield and Barbara Hoffman of Michigan. He leaves five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; plus 18 nieces and nephews.
Steve and Ann retired to Newcastle in 1996. However, a major part of his heart remained in his beloved Berkshire Hills. Steve was an unwavering fan of his World Champion Boston Red Sox.
A liturgy of Christian burial for Steven will be at 10 a.m., Wed., May 21 at St. Charles Church, 89 Briggs Ave., Pittsfield, Mass., celebrated by Rev. A. Peter Gregory, Pastor. Burial with full military honors will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Pittsfield, Mass.
