Vladimir “Rudy” Radoulovitch, 92, died on June 11 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta after a long illness.
He was born on Aug. 21, 1915 in Los Angeles, Cal. to Constantine Radoulovitch and Bertha Zaugg Radoulovitch. His school years were spent in Switzerland and Yugoslavia.
In WWII he was drafted to serve in the U.S. Army in 1942; sent to England, climbed the cliffs of Normandy in June 1944 and spent the rest of the war in France, returning to the U.S. in October 1945.
He later served in Salzburg, Austria; Istanbul, Turkey; Athens, Greece and a last assignment in Vietnam where he served as assistant labor attaché in the U.S. Embassy.
On May 10, 1947 he married the great love of his life, Daisy Palmer, and they started on a grand journey that lasted 61 years.
His greatest joy was planning trips for his family and the execution of these trips through the years. He loved to read; sometimes reading five or six books in a week’s time.
Before retirement, he and Daisy bought an old farm in Sheepscott and retired there in 1977. He enjoyed working in his little vegetable garden, digging out old stumps on the land and chopping wood.
In Sheepscott he volunteered with the volunteer fire department. He and Daisy volunteered to work at the Miles Hospital Rummage Sale for about 10 years. Together they volunteered and took pictures of all the buildings in Newcastle for the selectmen in 1989, for their use in revaluating the town. They joined the grange in Sheepscott, the Lincoln Pomona Grange, the State Grange and the National Grange. “Rudy” served for several years on the State Grange Legislative Committee.
He served as an officer of the local Garrison Hill Grange and as master for two years and for nearly 25 years acted as Santa at the grange sponsored community Christmas parties.
He and Daisy photographed all of the grange halls active and closed in Maine and presented them in a large album to Clyde Berry, who was master of the Maine State Grange at that time.
He leaves his devoted wife, Daisy; sons, Garrick and wife Susan of Patchegue, N.Y., David and wife Margaret of Medford, N.Y., and Constantine and wife Susan of Annandale, Va.; two grandsons, Alan Radoulovitch of Marina Del Rey, Cal., and Mark Radoulovitch of New York City, N.Y.; step granddaughter, Sharon Male of New York City, N.Y.; brother, Danilo Radell of Alexandria, Va.; four beautiful nieces; and many cousins in Switzerland and Yugoslavia.
At the family’s request, there will be no service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Garrison Hill Grange, c/o Sec. Priscilla Puckey, P.O. Box 311, Newcastle, ME 04553 or the Sheepscott Community Church, c/o Bill Robb, 583 Sheepscott Rd., Newcastle, ME 04553.
