
Walter N. Johansson, 93, died peacefully on the evening of March 31, 2026 at his home in Pemaquid. Born in Orange, N.J., he was the son of Nils and Ellen (Karlson) Johansson. He graduated from West Orange High School and Stevens Institute of Technology with the degree of mechanical engineer. He played lacrosse and is in the Stevens Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a registered professional engineer.
Mr. Johansson worked on liquid rocket engines for the X-15 research plane and Surveyor moon instrument package at Reaction Motors Division of Thiokol Chemical Corporation and Walter Kidde Co.
Mr. Johansson and Bernard Faber owned Brosites Industries, the New England representative for fiberglass reinforced plastic pipe. Projects included national and international with diameters up to 13 feet. He retired from Bath Iron Works where his responsibilities included the reverse osmosis water making system for the DDG51 Destroyer. After retirement he did light carpentry as Mr. Fixit.
Mr. Johansson enjoyed walking, cleaning roadsides, skiing, hiking, camping, small boating, designing, woodworking, and animals. One of his favorite pastimes was making a toast while gathering around the dinner table with friends and family. He was active in the Bristol Area Lions Club, the Round Pond United Methodist Church, Community Housing Improvement Project, Boy Scout Troop 228, Olde Bristol Days, Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust, Riverside Park, and Friends of Colonial Pemaquid.
Mr. Johansson was predeceased by his wife, Nancy; and his son, Peter, of Wiscasset.
He leaves his son, Eric and daughter-in-law, Suzanne; grandson, Ian, of Jersey City, N.J.; step-granddaughters, Annie Licata, of Long Branch, N.J., and Allie Weisberger and her husband, Alex, of Freehold, N.J.; step-great-grandsons, Jaxson Orban and Asher Weisberger; step-great-granddaughters, Cassidy and Violet Weisberger, of Freehold, N.J.; as well as brother-in-law, Richard Brown and his wife, Barbara, of Cochranville, Pa.; together with related sons and daughters.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, 2026 at the New Harbor United Methodist Church in New Harbor. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
