William “Bill” Russell, 82, of Round Pond, passed away on June 20 at his home with family by his side.
Bill was born on March 17, 1932 in Damariscotta, the son of Marion J. Russell and Herbert E. Russell. Bill attended Castner School and Lincoln Academy. Shortly after graduating Bill went into the Army, serving in the Korean conflict as a motor pool mechanic and also drove troop carriers.
Upon returning from his Army duties, Bill had numerous careers; from plowing snow in Damariscotta with his father, hauling logs and lumber, also many years as a plumber with LR French, to earthwork with his brother, Herb, before settling in Round Pond with his family.
Bill married his beloved wife, Frances Alley, on Sept. 17, 1956. In 1966 Bill and his family moved to Round Pond, where he and Fran ran a Veteran’s Boarding Home for over 30 years at King Ro Manor. In 1971 Bill and Fran reopened the store adjacent to King Ro Manor, naming it King Ro Market, which they ran for 20 years. Even after his son bought the store, Bill faithfully continued to open the store every morning, greeting fellow friends and neighbors. He continued this tradition for 20 more years.
Bill’s was the first face many newcomers to Round Pond encountered, always willing to embrace everyone and welcome them to the area. He always made it known that he would be willing to give assistance to whoever was in need. Because of his generosity, welcoming nature, and amazing capabilities, he was quickly labeled the “Mayor” of Round Pond.
During Bill’s 25-year tenure as president of The Round Pond Village Improvement Society, he implemented numerous changes that brought this society to the level it is today. He was also very active in the Muscongus Cemetery Association, volunteering his time, efforts and equipment to the preservation of the three cemeteries in Round Pond. Bill was also a volunteer fireman in the village for over 20 years, retiring as a lieutenant.
Bill loved spending time with his family at his cottage in Pemaquid on Johns Bay. He also enjoyed the numerous trips he took with his family from Quebec, to New Orleans and all over the Caribbean. Bill had a particular fondness for all animals and animals loved him in return.
Bill was predeceased by parents, Marion and Herbert Sr.; and brother, Herbert E. Russell Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years Frances; sons, Sidney Delong and wife Cynthia of Buxton, and BJ Russell and wife Lori Crook of Round Pond; daughter, Jill Daviero of South Portland; granddaughters, Leigh Russell and Paige Russell; grandsons, Brett Delong and Patrick Delong; and two great-grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, Bill requested that any donations go to the Muscongus Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 262, Round Pond, ME 04564.
There will be a celebration of Bill’s life and adventures at 4 p.m., Sat., July 26 at 53 Back Shore Rd., Round Pond.
