To the Editor:
I am very glad I live in an area where both high school and elementary school students can work together to achieve success for both their schools and the planet. Hannaford’s annual CLYNK competition recently awarded $2,000 to Lincoln Academy’s Climate Action Club for first place in their division in the state and Great Salt Bay Community School garnered second place with a prize of $1,000. It is not the first year our town had two winning teams in this competition!
If one were to imagine the mass of the 62,350 cans and bottles they turned in collectively over three months, it would fill over 630 lobster traps! This is great news for our landfill and a nice boost for the coffers of both schools to use for specific projects. Accomplishments like this do not occur without the help of dedicated leaders like Mr. Scimone, Kristie Houghton and lots of volunteer parents, family members and organizations who collected empty recyclables for the cause. This is sometimes messy business and with the weather we had it was an even greater challenge.
Anyone that would like to continue donating to the GSB PTA may do so at the bins provided at the transfer station. Climate Action Club members have green bags with stickers for people to use for donations. Hopefully in this way we are taking small steps at changing our culture through educating children about the importance of sustainable living. It also shows that nickels do add up!
