To the Editor:
I would like to congratulate the owners of the “Fisherman’s Catch Seafood Market” in Damariscotta for their effort to ‘Keep Damariscotta Independent’ by buying locally.
I am a lover of mussels and, as such, I take notice from where mussels are purchased. Many years ago, I used to be able to purchase them from Ed Meyers at Abandoned Farms, but as time went on, the mussel sources seem to be coming from further and further away from our local area.
In the not too distant past, they were coming from Canada – Prince Edward’s Island. Though those mussels were acceptable, they were “from away” and not from our community. In fact, it was because of the importing of those mussels from Canada that caused the Great Eastern Mussel Company to finally close down and, as a consequence, some 40 people lost their jobs.
Now, our local fish market has begun to purchase mussels from our local source and the mussels are a sheer delight to eat. The plumpness and uniformity are without peer and the real plus is the fact they are from Damariscotta, which ‘Helps Keep Damariscotta Independent”.
