To the editor:
I’d like to welcome our new LCN’s editor, Raye Leonard to our newspaper. Thank you for tackling an important and oftentimes thankless job. Perhaps the letters to the editor in last week’s LCN weren’t on your watch.
I would think being an editor of any newspaper would require one to weed out any content that is factually wrong and deliberately misleading. I think the letter to the editor in last week’s paper from a Tom Ruggerio titled, “Time to really follow the science,” certainly should have been weeded out.
The whole premise of his letter is that COVID-19 should be treated like any other seasonal influenza. He states misleading, inaccurate, and self serving data to fool people into a false belief the COVID-19 is only mildly worse than the flu.
Let me set the record straight. The average death toll from the flu in the United States is about 50,000 a year. The death toll from COVID-19 in the past year was over 600,000 and counting.
These are numbers that more accurately reflect the deadliness of COVID. Mr. Ruggerio can argue that not all those deaths are from COVID because some died with other illnesses, but other illnesses don’t mean that’s what killed them.
I have Crohn’s Disease; it’s very well controlled; it’s not likely to kill me, but in order to keep Crohn’s under control, I’m immune-suppressed. If I contract the more virulent Delta mutation and die (very possible given my age), the CDC would classify my death as being contributed to COVID. Mr Rugggerio seems to think that’s misleading.
Did Crohn’s Disease kill me? No, it’s well controlled. Did my contracting the new Delta variant from someone that reads Mr. Ruggerio’s misleading letter and decides to forgo the vaccine so it can mutate enough to get around my COVID vaccine antibodies and kill me? Yes, that’s most certainly a possibility.
Same can be said if one has heart disease, cancer, asthma or hundreds of other chronic ailments. If you contract COVID, you might die and your death, according to the CDC, would accurately list you as dying from COVID.
I’d also like to inform Mr. Ruggerio that no one has ever told us that influenza disease has been eradicated.
