Foods from around the world were represented during a sixth-grade health class smorgasbord on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at Nobleboro Central School.
Students brought in items representing nutrition from around the world, with foods ranging from Asian wontons, hummus, and tabouleh to apple pie and Dunkin’ Donuts Munchkins.
Health and physical education teacher Michelle York explained that the sixth-graders were studying nutrition and diets from around the globe. They were asked to bring in foods representing Eastern, Western, Mediterranean, and Asian diets. They are learning about healthy foods, including various nuts and oils, and ways of preparing meals and eating to promote good nutrition.
Abe Guilford’s homemade tabouleh was a hit. He said he made it himself and it took two hours to prepare. The most time-consuming part was soaking bulgur wheat in water for 90 minutes, he said. The Middle Eastern parsley salad contains fresh tomatoes, cucumbers. and lemon juice.
Other dishes included bread in a cup, fried rice, brownies, hummus and fresh vegetables, Asian shumai, pita bread, and apple pie.
