Scripps National Spelling Bee
Middle-level students, in grades five through eight, held the Scripps National Spelling Bee class-level contest on Jan. 5. The winners were: grade five — Demetri Cole, first; Eric Richmond, second; grade six — Victoria Ingram, first; Abby Reed, second; grade seven — Logan Heath, first; Halie Winchenbach, second; grade eight — Corina Gill, first; Madison Dodge, second.
Winners among students who competed at the school level to then go on to the county bee are Logan Heath, first, and Halie Winchenbach, second. The county bee will be held at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 7 in room 43 at Bristol Consolidated School (the snow date is Thursday, Feb. 9 at 4 p.m.).
School geography bee winners
Congratulations to Joel Pitcher, who was awarded first place, to Gavin Pinkham, who came in second, and to William Banks, who got third place in the JVS geography bee.
Eighth grade information
The eighth grade class will be visiting Erskine Academy in South China to shadow on Tuesday, Jan. 24, during the morning hours.
On Wednesday, Jan. 25, Lincoln Academy in Newcastle will host the first Eighth Grade Information Night for incoming families. This will be a nuts-and-bolts session for families to find out more about course registration and the LA curriculum, and to talk to guidance counselors about individual questions.
JVS PTA
Family Paint Night is full! Confirmations have been sent out via email to all families that will be attending the Friday, Jan. 20 event.
The annual Family Heart-to-Heart Dance will take place from 6-7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 10. This dance is for all students in kindergarten through eighth grade and their families. All students must be accompanied by an adult the whole time. No exceptions, please. In lieu of admission, attendees are asked to please bring one nonperishable food item per person for admission. All food items will be donated to the Jefferson Area Community Food Pantry.
The next PTA meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7.
