Field trip to Africa
Sara Flewelling’s first- and second-grade classroom “flew” to Nairobi, Kenya on March 13. The students took a virtual flight to Africa as part of their African studies unit and not only learned tons of facts but also met two young girls who went to different schools, toured the city streets of Nairobi, and visited Victoria Falls in Zambia.
They also “visited” the Great Rift Valley, which runs through Mozambique, and a volcano named Erta Ale, located in Ethiopia, and they went on a jungle safari. Boy, were those kids tired after their trip!
Did you know over a billion people live in Africa, many of whom do not have access to electricity or clean water?
On the return trip home, one student said, “Man, I’m lucky I live in South Bristol!”
Boat raffle winner
The winner of the boat raffle, drawn at Tuesday’s town meeting, was Linda Nichols, of Readfield. She said she bought her ticket during Pumpkinfest and was over the top with excitement about winning this prize. There was certainly excitement in her voice! The eighth-grade class should be proud of the amount of tickets they sold. Although we didn’t count every ticket one by one, we can say with confidence that the students sold a record amount of tickets. Their efforts will be rewarded during their class trip to Washington, D.C.
