Lincoln Academy boys’ basketball team dropped two close games to Leavitt and Maranacook in their opening week of KVAC play.
The Black Bears of Maranacook nipped the Eagles 47-42 Tuesday night in Readfield. “They took the lead early and held on. We pulled within four, and three. We cut the lead to two once, but were unable to get over the hump,” coach John Gosselin said.
The Bears led 10-8, 19-17, and 34-26 at the quarter breaks.
Scoring for Lincoln were Stephen Quinlan 9, Brandon Reilly 8, Everett Martin 7, Dylan Leavitt 5, Ryley Leavitt 4, Nic Phinney 4, Kyle Scherer 3 and Jalen Lincoln 2.
Scoring for Maranacook were Zach Kennedy 22, Harry Lanshenr 9, Kyle Boucher 6, Chris Pelletier 6, Seth Miller 2 and Andrew Lachance 2.
The Eagles lost junior Merritt Wotton for the season, due to injuries suffered in a car accident in Jefferson on Saturday. Wotton’s injuries are not life threatening, but he suffered a back injury, requiring him to wear a brace for 12 weeks.
Trailing by 20 at the half, Lincoln got five points back by the end of the third quarter and pulled within 10 with 2:22 to play in the game. Leavitt made six of six shots from the foul line in the final two minutes to freeze the Eagles’ comeback bid.
