Boothbay Regional High School junior Chase Brown has been chasing Madison’s Matt McClintock all season. He finished six seconds behind at the Festival of Champions in Belfast on Oct. 2. Brown beat McClintock by 10 seconds on Saturday at the Mt.Valley Conference championships at UMA in Augusta to win the league cross country title.
Brown came close to falling with about a half mile to run, when he slipped in the mud in a large puddle. Brown maintained his balance with McClintock on his heels, then put it into overdrive to out kick his league rival.
Boothbay boys placed five scoring runners in the top 20 to win the MVC title with 45 points. Monmouth (five scoring runners in top 17) was a close second with 49 points, Telstar 85, Lisbon 95, Winthrop 113, Hall-Dale 148, Wiscasset 208, and St. Doms 209.
C. Brown placed first in 16:22, beating out McClintock 16:32. Nate Schwehm was 3rd in 17:45, Tom Brown 8th in 18:56, Alex Owen 13th in 19:25, and Stephen Barter 20th in 20:00.
Also running for Boothbay were 25. Cameron White, 20:18; 32. Dan Murray, 30:39; 42. Robert Campbell, 21:24; 43. Wyatt Anthony, 21:33; 47. Sam Schwehm, 22:13; 53. Andy Panagore, 23:05; and, 70. Caleb Colby, 30:08.
Wiscasset placed seventh, edging St. Dom’s by one point. Ryan Urquhart was the top Redskin runner in 40th place in a time of 21:14. Kyle Shute was 56th in 23:27; Matt Mills 60th in 24:40; Joe Chapman 63rd in 25:34; and, Thomas Abeutler 65th in 26:13.
